Backed by strong investment in R&amp;D, strategic acquisitions, and a performance-driven culture, the company has embedded continuous learning at the heart of its operations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learning &amp; Development (L&amp;D)<\/strong> plays a central role in this transformation. <strong>Alfonso Caballero, who heads up L&amp;D for AstraZeneca Spain, believes learning must go beyond instruction\u2014it must drive change<\/strong>. \u201cOur teams are in a constant process of upskilling. Science evolves, our customers change, and the skills required of our commercial teams evolve accordingly,\u201d he says in an interview with Netex Learning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, AstraZeneca hit its long-term revenue goal of $45 billion, a target set a decade earlier. Now entering a new growth phase, continuous learning is seen as key to sustaining progress. <strong>\u201cWe have a well-defined omnichannel strategy that requires a rethink in terms of digital skills, including a shift in mindset,\u201d<\/strong> Caballero notes. That shift, he admits, takes time. <strong>\u201cChanging how people work is never easy. In a corporate world increasingly focused on metrics, the emotional and cultural dimensions of learning can be overlooked\u2014but not here. <strong>\u201cAt AstraZeneca, we\u2019re united by a shared purpose: to improve patients\u2019 lives. It\u2019s not just a slogan\u2014it\u2019s something you feel throughout the company,\u201d<\/strong> says Caballero.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That shared purpose acts as a cultural anchor. <strong>\u201cEveryone here, no matter their role, understands their contribution is meaningful and essential,\u201d<\/strong> he adds. This mindset helps to foster deep employee engagement from the outset\u2014a crucial asset in a fiercely competitive industry where retaining skilled talent is a constant challenge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019re working consistently on how to implement generative AI. We\u2019ve mapped the core processes for each role and are developing targeted learning programmes accordingly.&#8221; &#8211;<\/p><cite> Alfonso Caballero<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI and Operational Efficiency: A New Learning Paradigm<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The rise of generative AI is redefining the corporate learning landscape. At AstraZeneca, the approach is precise and data-led, focusing on role-specific use cases and tailored training. <strong>\u201cWe\u2019re working consistently on how to implement generative AI. We\u2019ve mapped the core processes for each role and are developing targeted learning programmes accordingly,\u201d <\/strong>Caballero explains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is enabling a new level of personalisation while also boosting efficiency. <strong>\u201cWe\u2019re creating bespoke content for each function, based on real use cases. Of course, we\u2019re also addressing responsible AI usage through awareness training and by working exclusively with internal tools.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That emphasis on responsible use aligns with the company\u2019s ethical standards and builds trust in its digital strategy. In an organisation with over 70,000 employees and nearly 180 active development projects, learning must be precise, regulated, and innovation-driven.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Measuring Impact Beyond Satisfaction<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In highly technical and regulated environments like pharmaceuticals, tracking the real-world impact of training is as important as content delivery. AstraZeneca is implementing new systems to monitor knowledge transfer via line managers. <strong>\u201cA programme is only successful if it leads to measurable improvements\u2014in efficiency, sales performance, or staff retention,\u201d<\/strong> Caballero says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company now plans to take the next step: measuring the ROI of training programmes for commercial teams. <strong>\u201cIt\u2019s not an easy task, but we\u2019re committed to building a consistent model,\u201d<\/strong> he adds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The L&amp;D team is also analysing the correlation between key competencies and employee performance. <strong>\u201cWe assess how well-defined skills match those of our top performers. This helps us identify the competencies that truly drive success.\u201d<\/strong> Such data-driven insights enable smarter allocation of training resources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cOnly those organisations willing to engage in tough conversations will ultimately succeed.\u201d<\/strong> &#8211; <\/p><cite>Alfonso Caballero<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transcendent Leadership: Developing Leaders Who Develop Others<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At AstraZeneca, leadership isn\u2019t about hierarchy\u2014it\u2019s about building trust and creating a sense of shared mission. Caballero defines it as: <strong>\u201cTranscendent leadership taps into the individual\u2019s sense of purpose. It\u2019s about more than incentives or professional goals\u2014it\u2019s about leaders who create other leaders, and who foster accountability.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company\u2019s leadership training focuses on three core pillars: trust, commitment, and openness to change. \u201c<strong>We place a strong emphasis on handling difficult conversations and feedback<\/strong>. Our training equips people to communicate with empathy and assertiveness\u2014skills that support both individual and organisational growth,\u201d he explains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This ethos is deeply embedded in the company\u2019s culture. <strong>\u201cOnly those organisations willing to engage in tough conversations will ultimately succeed,\u201d<\/strong> Caballero concludes.
