{"id":2474,"date":"2016-11-25T08:33:37","date_gmt":"2016-11-25T08:33:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/en\/?p=2474"},"modified":"2016-11-25T11:42:37","modified_gmt":"2016-11-25T11:42:37","slug":"much-ado-about-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/en\/blog\/much-ado-about-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Much ado about learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.willstorr.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Will Storr<\/a>\u2019s presentation at <a href=\"https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/en\/2016-london\/\" target=\"_blank\">i-love learning London<\/a> was about story building, a less than usual theme for a learning conference but unquestionably appropriate for one at a venue adjacent to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shakespearesglobe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shakespeare\u2019s Globe Theatre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Storr\u2019s assertion, early in his presentation, that the human mind \u00a0is a story processor, not a logic processor (originally an observation by <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=U21BxGfm3RUC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;redir_esc=y&amp;hl=en#v=onepage&amp;q=%22human%20mind%20is%20a%20story%20processor%2C%20not%20a%20logic%20processor%22&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Haidt<\/a>), quickly helped us realise that this was indeed a truly relevant subject for anyone involved in the battle to engage learners online.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2491 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ilovelearning-uk-photos1.jpg\" alt=\"ilovelearning-uk-photos1\" width=\"1600\" height=\"888\" srcset=\"https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ilovelearning-uk-photos1.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ilovelearning-uk-photos1-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ilovelearning-uk-photos1-768x426.jpg 768w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ilovelearning-uk-photos1-1024x568.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ilovelearning-uk-photos1-600x333.jpg 600w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ilovelearning-uk-photos1-825x458.jpg 825w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ilovelearning-uk-photos1-680x377.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Storr then gave us helpful advice on how we can achieve just that. He explained that we respond best to the most commonly told story patterns which, in the west at least, typically follow a classic format of \u2018crisis, struggle, resolution\u2019. In short, the story starts with a crisis or problem which creates the challenge. This is followed by the struggle \u2013 understanding the challenge and exploring the possible outcomes. Finally, there is the resolution itself \u2013 the drawing together of the strands of the plot and the d\u00e9nouement.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so we are trying to reveal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Who specifically wants what?<\/li>\n<li>How are they trying to get it?<\/li>\n<li>What are the obstacles\/mysteries?<\/li>\n<li>What are the ramifications of failure?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s interesting that storytellers and elearning designers are occupied with the same issue. That is catching and keeping the attention of brains. In the past, storytellers have largely accomplished this via trial and error, looking at what works in other people\u2019s stories and copying it. But by identifying these preferred story structures, we increase the chance of getting it right. Elearning designers arguably face the same challenge. By deploying a similar story telling formula, they too may dramatically increase learner engagement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Following Will Storr to the stage,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelpi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">LPI Director Ed Monk<\/a> asserted that efficacy \u2013 the ability to create a desired result \u2013 is becoming ever more critical in shaping elearning solutions. With reporting and measurement of learning becoming ever smarter, this makes sense. But this is also relevant to our stories-theme. For so long elearning practitioners viewed content as a formal set of instructions, to be rigidly followed and measured. But, if Will and Ed are to be believed, we are now moving to a world of more fluid elearning structures. Not just in the way it is presented but also how it is consumed and measured. This clearly opens the way for a new wave of elearning less governed by the limitations technology but measured by learners\u2019 positive reactions. He revealed some of the company\u2019s development plans for 2017 which reinforced these views. He asserted that mobile today is more lifestyle than technology reiterating the suggestion that the challenge ahead for elearning is also about substance and engagement. If the point hadn\u2019t been made strongly enough, we finally focused on one of the most interesting developments of the night \u2013 the new releases of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.netexlearning.com\/en\/contents\/smart-content\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong> smart content<\/strong><\/a>. That is content with collaboration and learning analytics built in. The ability to create stories with built in collaboration and analytics can only boost their attraction as learning solutions.<\/p>\n<p>The evening finished with drinks and fine canapes \u2013 and the guests\u2019 chance to tell each other their own stories.
