Not only was it Valentine\u2019s Day and our 10th We Love Learning Summit, but it was also our first face-to-face one since Covid and it was great to be back. Holding it on Valentine\u2019s Day was no coincidence. Love was why we were there: to celebrate and share our love of learning with likeminded L&amp;D professionals and experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To celebrate this milestone event, it was hosted in a new venue, the beautiful and quirky Platea Madrid. An old theatre that has been modernised, it is often used for corporate events. And at our event it felt like both. With makeshift \u2018stall\u2019 seats, along with packed balconies above, it had a theatre vibe. But with our branded coloured lights \u2013 purples, blues, pinks \u2013 and a fully decked out bar along one side, it certainly had some nightclub vibes going too. Not to mention the raised stage, which made the speakers look and feel like rockstars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"We Love Learning Summit 2023\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B1eiYhBCVKo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With the gentle piano music mixed with the buzz and murmuring of the guests\u2019 voices, it had a relaxed atmosphere from the get-go. And it was clear that everyone was excited to be back in person, to be able to socialise, network and catch up. As people, the social beings that we are, we were definitely back in our element.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our speakers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We had a truly international line up of speakers, representing Belgium, Ghana, England, Spain and Argentina. These fantastic experts were there to share their insights and inspire L&amp;D professionals to try new things and to think in new ways when it comes L&amp;D training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were joined by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ousman-umar-53b275134\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ousman Umar<\/a>, Co-Founder of NASCO Feeding Minds<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/katjaschipperheijn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kajta Schipperhejin<\/a>, learning strategist, consultant and author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Learning-Ecosystems-Innovative-Tech-driven-Strategies\/dp\/1398607401\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Learning Ecosystems<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/donaldhtaylor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donald Taylor<\/a>, Chairman at Learning Technologies Conference\u202fand driving force behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/donaldhtaylor.co.uk\/survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Sentiment Survey<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/linkedinpaultran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paul Tran<\/a>, People Director at Estrella Galicia\u00a0<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mariano-sigman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mariano Sigman<\/a>, neuroscientist and author of El Poder de Las Palabras\u202f(The Power of Words)<\/li><li>We also hosted a panel discussion with: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/begonalopezcanoibarreche\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bego\u00f1a L\u00f3pez-Cano<\/a>, People Director at Inditex; Pepa Fern\u00e1ndez Ostolaza, Human Resources Director and Intern Goverment Spain Senate; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/abalibrea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00c1lvaro Balbibrea<\/a>, Manager at Navarra University and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/carla-amar-9a4a1513\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carla Amar<\/a>, Global People Director at Netex.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Feeding our minds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ousman Umar kicked off the event with a rousing and inspiring speech, relaying his harrowing journey escaping Ghana for Europe, which took him 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0207_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7809\" srcset=\"https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0207_1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0207_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0207_1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Ousman Umar, Co-Founder of NASCO Feeding Minds<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>His journey taught him that education was the key to changing lives, and that\u2019s what he set out to do. It\u2019s his mission to bring education to towns, communities, and villages in Africa, believing the most important thing you can do is feed people\u2019s minds. \u201cGiving food will satiate hunger for a day, but if you feed their minds, you\u2019re satiating a hunger for many years,\u201d he shared. And with the 53 IT schools his organisation has opened, which have taught over 60,000 pupils, his success is remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was an incredible story, and the perfect beginning to an event which was all about inspiring others to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what did we learn? With such rich, engaging sessions it\u2019s hard to summarise them. But here is a flavour and a key takeaway from each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn from our children<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Katja Schipperheijn wants to inspire, provoke, and change how we learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her speech, she encouraged us to turn to our children, and as someone who works closely with children, she knows first-hand the power this can bring. The ground-breaking technology are no longer the future, but the present. And our children are emersed in it. Through platforms \u2013 TikTok and Roblox being two she mentioned \u2013 they are gaining new skills that schools aren\u2019t providing them and we shouldn\u2019t lose sight of this. We have to accept that learning is now so much than we do at school; if we don\u2019t, society will lose big talents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Have a \u2018Bring your child to work\u2019 day. Bring them in and ask what they would do to change to make it a place they would want to work. You\u2019ll be surprised by what you learn!<\/p><cite>Katja Schipperhejin<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The future is AI and data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Donald Taylor, a familiar face at the We Love Learning events, talked about the findings on his latest <a href=\"https:\/\/donaldhtaylor.co.uk\/survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Sentiment Survey<\/a>, the results which had only been released the day before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1049\" src=\"https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0308_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7819\" srcset=\"https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0308_1.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0308_1-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0308_1-1024x671.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0308_1-768x504.jpg 768w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0308_1-1536x1007.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><figcaption>Donald Taylor, Chairman at Learning Technologies Conference\u202fand driving force behind the Global Sentiment Survey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, to assess how trends are changing and how L&amp;D professionals feel, he always asks the same question \u2018What will be hot in workplace L&amp;D?\u2019, and this year the clear winner seemed to be <strong>AI <\/strong>(which jumped from #12 the previous year to #2) and <strong>learning analytics<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0310_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7821\" width=\"390\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0310_1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0310_1-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0310_1-768x563.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 390px) 100vw, 390px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s right, it seems that data is on the L&amp;D professional\u2019s mind. We\u2019re excited about it and recognise it\u2019s potential. But, he asked, do we know how to use it?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And are we ready for AI? He\u2019s not sure. He explained that AI is at the lowest quality that it\u2019s ever going to be, meaning that it\u2019s only going to improve. And though both AI and data have the ability to change the way we do L&amp;D, the only way we can make the most of it is to take the time to learn how best to work with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>When it comes to data, it\u2019s dirty and messy, but we shouldn\u2019t let that put us off. We need to get comfortable with querying it, and doing what we can to make it trustworthy; only then can we start to use it properly.<\/p><cite>Donald H Taylor<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens when you bring training leaders together?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our panel discussion, chaired by Gonzalo Guirao Sagi-Vela, explored people, learning, and technology, and how we can find a balance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1066\" src=\"https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0702_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7823\" srcset=\"https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0702_1.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0702_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0702_1-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0702_1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/welove.netexlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20230214JR_0702_1-1536x1023.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><figcaption>Left to right: Gonzalo Guirao, Pepa Fern\u00e1ndez, Bego\u00f1a L\u00f3pez-Cano, Carla Amar and \u00c1lvaro Balibrea.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Between them, our speakers revealed how training has changed, how digital training has been embraced by their very different audiences and organisations, and what challenges and worries they face.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The varied speakers provided a wonderful opportunity to hear first-hand how their approaches compare and why. How a governmental organisation, whose average age of their staff is 50+ years, uses digital training compared to a company whose average age was 29, and whose staff are more naturally emersed in technology in their daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Don\u2019t try to replicate the old training using digital tools. You should look to start from scratch. If you replicate, you\u2019re not going to solve problems. If anything, you could create more problems.<\/p><cite>Pepa Fern\u00e1ndez Ostolaza<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Add a further comparison with a university whose professors, lecturers have found ways to introduce digital training into their classes, and you can imagine how rich in insights this panel discussion was!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a real demonstration of how there is no \u2018one size fits all\u2019 when it comes to digital training. You have to find what works for your organisation. As Bego\u00f1a L\u00f3pez-Cano of Inditex explained, \u201cIt is essential that your training is related to your business. How do your people want to work? How do you adapt to that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thinking-outside-the-box training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whereas everyone was talking theories and training in general, Paul Tran, of Estrella Galicia, talked through their ground-breaking training programme, La Universidad de la cerveza (\u201cThe Beer University\u201d). It was a revealing example of training that gets people excited, that takes an experience they know, a culture they love, and builds training around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blowing our minds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Who knew a thumb war would be so much fun as an adult? Not only do we come to conclusions very quickly, he explained, often by interpretating data we take from our environment, how we feel, or past experiences, but we often come to the wrong conclusions. In fact, the assumptions we make about ourselves, such as the belief that we\u2019re not good at something, are the reasons we stop ourselves from learning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that we can change our minds, if we\u2019re willing to put the time and effort in. If we\u2019re willing to combine our old beliefs with new information and come to new conclusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Bad conversations never change ideas; the conversations that do are ones that are in good faith, and ones in which we listen to each other.<\/p><cite>Mariano Sigman<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s a wrap.
